Southern Automobiles has opened the doors to its brand-new Mitsubishi showroom in Invercargill — a space that blends modern design with a nod to history.
During the rebuild, copper pipes from the building’s former life as Valentines Restaurant were uncovered beneath the concrete floor, a reminder of the stories that shaped this site.
“The floor tells a story, and now we’re writing the next chapter,” said Dealer Principal Michelle Findlater.
The showroom officially opened in early December, with Mitsubishi New Zealand’s national team flying south to celebrate alongside owners Ken and Yvonne Cummings, who cut the ribbon to mark the occasion.
Southern Automobiles credits its design and build partners — Varcoe McMillan Architecture, Project Manager Max Presbury, and Barry Stewart Builders — for turning the vision into reality.
The original structure was completely gutted and rebuilt, creating a world-class space that showcases Mitsubishi and Nissan brands while delivering an exceptional customer experience.
“We’re investing in Southland because we believe in its future,” Michelle said. “Our goal is to support local industries and communities while building a strong foundation for growth.”
Michelle, who joined Southern Automobiles in July last year, described the journey as exciting and rewarding. “Seeing the new build come to life and having a team that’s passionate about delivering outstanding service is something I’m incredibly proud of.”
The automotive industry continues to evolve rapidly, with new models and technologies emerging every year. While the EV and PHEV market has slowed following changes to government incentives, hybrids remain popular, and advancements in petrol engine technology are driving impressive fuel efficiency gains.
