New Structure for SPCA Southland

SPCA delegates voted to form one national organisation at the National AGM which was held in June.
Not many people realise that the Southland SPCA and the other SPCA Centres around the country have previously been independently governed and financed.
This was not sustainable or fit-for- purpose. There can be more done for the animals when there is a one National team.
After two years of discussions and consultation the regions have made the decision to unite into one organisation and do more for the vulnerable animals in Southland and across New Zealand.
As one SPCA the organisation will have a stronger SPCA Inspectorate and more will be able to be done to prevent cruelty to animals through advocacy and education.
As one there will be a sharing of resources to make sure that every vulnerable animal will get the best care the SPCA can provide, no matter where they are in the country.
As one organisation there will be the ability to access centralised funding opportunities and benefit from economies of scale – enabling Southland to have the resources to do more for the animals.
SPCA Southland is currently going through the process of officially joining the one SPCA entity. ‘Day 1’ of the new SPCA will be 1 November 2017. Day-to- day not much will change for the animals. They will still be getting feed, housed, getting vet treatment, Staff and volunteers will still be rescuing animals that are in need, the Inspectors will still be following up on reported complaints.
Southland’s Operation Manager Richard Hay said ‘There are exciting changes ahead, Southlands ongoing purpose is to help animals in need and support our community in looking after those that cannot speak or defend for themselves.
The Southland staff are looking forward to working under the new structure and can see the many benefits of joining as one including better security for the future sustainability of presence and the work they do in Southland.’ He said ‘Southland still needs more than ever the help of the Southland community and all animal lovers.
Together the Southland SPCA has saved countless lives and intend to continue to do so by joining the one organisation.’
As one SPCA, Southland is likely to benefit from new funding opportunities and economies of scale – but will still remain first-and- foremost a community funded organisation. SPCA does not receive any direct government funding to help the animals, and instead rely on Southlander’ who love animals.
Simply put, SPCA existence in Southland can only exist through the communities’ generous donations and support – If it is to work Southland will continue to need this help now and in the future.
