The installation of new Variable Speed Limit signs outside 14 local schools will improve safety as Southland children return to school, Invercargill MP Penny Simmonds says.

“The New Zealand Transport Agency has had contractors installing these signs over the summer, and they are now ready to operate at peak times outside schools for term one,” she said.

“This is part of the Government’s approach to setting safer speed limits outside schools, protecting children and their families.

“Research shows that reduced speed limits, when in force at school drop-off and pick-up times, can make a real difference in keeping children safe.

“These new signs are an excellent additional safety mechanism, especially when children are first back at school for the New Year.

“Southland is one of several regions around the country where these new Variable Speed Limit signs have been installed.”

The local schools include Ascot Community, Edendale Primary, Hauroko Valley, Hedgehope, Makarewa, Sacred Heart (Waikiwi), St John’s Girls’, St Patrick’s (Nightcaps), St Thomas’s (Winton), Te Anau and Winton.

“At peak times, speed limits will drop to 30km/h or 60km/h, depending on the road and safety requirements.”
