Invercargill Central Limited’s new centre manager Kelvin Mooney is one of the luckiest guys in town.

Imagine being the first person to be handed the keys to the new multi-million dollar inner city development when Stage One opens on 14th of July.

Beginning his new role in March, Kelvin is responsible for tenants, the building, processes, systems, contractors and a dedicated on site team so that when it’s time to open the doors, everything is in place, from the cleaners right through to the fire safety plan to ensure the customers are delighted, and the tenants have a fantastic environment to work in.

“My passion is retail and operations to make things tick.”  I like people and the energy of retail, it’s what makes me happy,” he said.

Born and bred in Roxburgh, Kelvin worked in Wanaka and Cromwell before heading south with his family 12 years ago, to manage Smiths City, then Farmers, and most recently The Warehouse.

He also holds a Bachelor of Applied Management, Business Administration, Management and Operations that was completed in 2020.

There’s no doubt he’s pretty excited to be part of something so new for Invercargill, “It’s a piece of history, and to be at the start of this is a privilege.  I’m so pleased my wife and I made with move to Southland, we both love it.”

He also gets to build his own team from scratch, with a marketing manager and an operations manager coming onboard within the next few months.

Responsible for the environment of so many businesses that will eventually be part of the Centre, “with a million moving parts,” Kelvin said it was a dream come to true for him, and it’s a real win for the community to have access to so many major retailers, and such a variety of new fantastic food offerings with a car park in the middle of the city.
