Invercargill now has its very own computer gaming lounge thanks to Ray Luck.

Many people know Ray as the ‘EB Games guy’ but the 29-year-old has decided to step out of the retail scene after many years, and start his own business Orion PCs.

Offering people of all ages- and particularly teenagers, a place to play to hang out together and play computer games was the inspiration behind the business, and eventually he’ll also sell computer parts as well.

Orion PC’s has eight to 10 PCs set up instore and a massive projector across an entire wall for those wanting a different experience than just playing at home alone in their bedroom.

During his time in retail, Ray said he’d often notice teenagers hanging out in the city with nothing to do, and some would come into the store to chat to him about gaming.

What better idea than to have a lounge set up for people of all ages to experience gaming together with the thrill of interacting with others at the same time.

Describing it as a “suped up internet cafe,” Ray has already taken many bookings for the space for birthday parties, and has only been open a week in downtown Invercargill.

“A lot of kids have a console at home but it’s a very different experience being in here on a gaming PC.  You can’t just yell across the room to the guy next to you and interact when you’re at home.”

Already in the first week a group of 25 to 29-year olds have come back every day to play, each time bringing an extra person with them.

Once more established he’ll also offer tournaments once a month, where people can come in and form a team, sign up and win prizes.

“It’s so cool to hear the excitement buzzing through the door.  We’ve definitely had a positive response so far.  We are seeing this little community building up which is what we wanted.”

Open from Wednesday to Sunday 11am to 7pm, he will look at the possibility of a late night as well when the ‘Counterstrike’ tournaments get underway.

He’s also keen to offer PC building courses for those interested in learning how to come in and make their own computer.

Orion PC's are located in the Connections Arcade (formerly SIT Arcade)
