A much needed boost for the Southland dairy industry with news out that a new dairy processing plant is to be built in the province.
Mataura Valley Milk have announced plans to build a $200m high tech processing plant at McNab, 7k’s north of Gore.
State owned China Animal Husbandry is taking a stake of just shy of 72% . Local farmer suppliers will hold a 20% stake.
The new venture is expected to create in excess of 100 jobs and directors say the new venture will inject significant income into the province as well as grow added value dairy exports.
Mataura Valley Milk director Aaron Moody is reported saying the global infant formula market was worth $57 billion in 2013, and the market in China alone is expected to reach $38b by 2017
Reports indicate that China already consumes well over half of the global infant formula market and that is growing by the day.
Talk about building a dairy processing plant at McNab is nothing new but with confirmation that a major Chinese business is taking a major stake, it would seem that this time around it’s a goer !
Work on the pharmaceutical standard plant is expected to start later in the year.
