KartSport Southland will host this year’s KartSport New Zealand National Sprint Championships at Sandy Point in Invercargill this weekend (April 14-16).

The KartSport Southland club regularly bids for major national meetings and has hosted the annual sprint championships twice in the past 12 years (2005 and 2011).

In that time the sport has nurtured the fledgling careers of New Zealand’s current crop of world-beating drivers. Including the Junior Restricted title winner at the Invercargill event in 2005, Mitch Evans, who now drives for the Jaguar Formula E team; and the Cadet class title winner at Invercargill in 2011, recent Ferrari Academy signing, Marcus Armstrong.

This year’s event will see 10 separate class titles contested, including the Rotax DD2 class – for the first time. Qualifying ends on Friday (April 14) with racing on Saturday (April 15) and Sunday (April 16) scheduled to be held each day between 9am and 4.30pm.

Spectators are welcome to attend. For more information go to www.kartsport.org.nz
