Josh Burnett from Southland, riding for the MitoQ-NZ Cycling Project, has emerged as the champion of the Tour de Beauce in Canada.
The fifth and final stage in downtown Saint-Georges, Quebec, was won by Conn McDunphy of the Skyline team. McDunphy made a decisive solo attack with two laps to go, clinching the stage victory.
The final stage was thrilling, with ten riders within 80 seconds of the leader, making the outcome uncertain. The 12-lap, 122km urban circuit lived up to its reputation for being demanding, with various strategies aimed at cracking the MitoQ lineup. Burnett, with substantial support from his teammates, managed to secure the overall victory through his own effort.
For 23-year-old Burnett, this win marks his first international title, making his long journey to Canada worthwhile. Burnett finished 44 seconds ahead of Tyler Stites from Echelon Racing. In addition to the overall win, Burnett was fifth in the green jersey battle, fifth in the Points race, and third in the Mountain jersey, just ahead of his teenage teammate, Marshall Erwood.
