One of Southland’s oldest schools is about to mark it’s 150th Jubilee.
Middle School in central Invercargill will celebrate the milestone on Labour Weekend,
Current principal Sarah Read says Middle School opened on January 27th 1873 on the site that it currently occupies. She say’s it’s the oldest operating school within the city boundary’s.
Ms Read says today the school has a role of 160 pupils approximately with 7 classrooms operating fulltime with ten teaching staff. There are 18 staff in total.
Board of Trustees member Pam Campbell says registrations are going well but recommends that those who haven’t registered to not leave to late.
Pam Campbell it’ll be a busy weekend with a Friday night function at Emberz Restaurant and a final catchup/ farewell at the Cheeky Llama on the Sunday
She says former Southern Sting player, Steel coach and former teacher Reinga Bloxham (Te Huia) will be the guest speaker at the main function on Saturday night at The Invercargill Workingmen’s Club.
A mihi whakatau performed by current pupils will also be held on the Saturday.
As for what’s happening at the school now, principal Sarah Read says an old coal boiler has been taken out and replaced with a pellet boiler. She says refurbishments of the classrooms will take place over the summer holidays.
