Rumours of Tiwai Aluminium Smelter’s Pot Line #4 being re-opened are circulating around Invercargill and the media, NZ Herald has a story behind their paywall.
Saying “Less than a month after signalling that it could close the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter, there are signs the owner may be preparing to restart a potline which was closed during lockdown” but the company is saying otherwise.
A Rio Tinto spokeswoman said this afternoon, the company had no intention of opening pot line number 4.
The owners signalled they were starting to wind down Tiwai almost a month ago, and had already closed the pot line during lockdown.
But there have been rumours that Pot Line #4 would be back open again in September.
