Woodlands Midfielder Matt Whaanga, 24, has recommitted to the SBS Bank Southland Stags for the upcoming Bunnings NPC Season.

Whaanga, who made his debut for Southland in 2021, is looking forward to being back in Southland colours once again this season.

“It’s been refreshing for me being in the Stags and represent this province” said Whaanga, who previously played for rivals Otago in 2020.

“It means a lot to me, especially now that I’ve got an understanding of just how proud Southland is of the Stags”.

With eight games in the midfield last season, Whaanga stamped his name on the number 12 jersey.

At 188cm and 104 kg, Matt is a player Stags coaches are pleased to have in Southland and growing his game in the Stags camp.

Attack coach James Wilson is pleased for Matt’s commitment to Southland.

“Matt showed us plenty of potential last year on both sides of the ball, with his speed and agility on attack and ability to apply pressure on teams with his aggressive defensive style.”

The midfielder’s natural talent made it easy for him to fit in with the Stags squad last season, said Wilson.

“I look forward to seeing the growth in his game from his experience gained in 2021 and excited about what he can do for us this season”.

Matt is a key player in what has been labelled a powerhouse backline for Woodlands this Go Bus Senior Club Rugby Season and will be looking for a threepeat in the Galbraith Shield.
