It will be a massive start to 2023 at Teretonga Park with three big events at the circuit to start the year.
International motor racing returns from 19-22 January with the Castrol Toyota Racing Series paying its first visit to Teretonga Park since 2020 due to border closures. The series is part of the Super Sprint Motorsport New Zealand Championships.
On the series last visit in 2020 it was New Zealand’s top future Formula 1 prospect, Liam Lawson, who won the Spirit Of A Nation Trophy while Yuki Tsunoda of Japan was in the field of up and coming talents from around the globe. One year later Tsunoda was in the F1 World Championship alongside the likes of Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen as well as four other drivers who have visited Teretonga Park as part of the series in recent times – Lando Norris, Nicolas Latifi, Lance Stroll and Guanyu Zhou, Norris and Stroll winning the series on their visits.
Confirmed to tackle the series so far are 18-year-old Brazilian Lucas Fecury, 17-year-old US Formula 4 race winner Ryan Shehan, Australians Tom McLennan and Ryder Quinn plus kiwis Callum Hedge and Breanna Morris. The latest names are American’s, 19-year-old David Morales and 18-year-old Chloe Chambers.
Morales has raced in America, Britain and Asia while Chinese born Chambers raced Formula 4 in the US before joining the W-Series, an all-female racing series.
There will be more names to come – will we be seeing more F1 stars of the future in January?
One of the biggest meetings of the season at Teretonga Park in Invercargill is the annual Classic SpeedFest from 17-19 February with another sensational line up of classic racing machinery containing many rare and exotic race cars across a variety of classes heading our way.
The event will feature Pre 78 Classic Saloons, the Historic & Vintage Racing Association, Vintage Racing Cars, Classic Saloons, Sports Cars, Racing Cars plus the Noel McIntyre Drainage Club Saloons.
The weekend of 18/19 March will see the return of Southern Thunder, with the headline acts being the mighty NZ Super Trucks alongside the Mainland Muscle Cars and a big supporting programme.
Buckle up and get ready.
