Marchers from all over New Zealand have descended on Invers for this year’s National Marching Champs
Marching Southland publicity officer Amanda Martin says 38 teams from 9 associations have made the trip south.
She says each team consists of 12 to 15 marchers and coaches.
Ms Martin says some of the teams have been in Invers since last Sunday and everybody will be in town today for the start of the championships.
She says its been about 12 years since the city last hosted the National Champs and that it’s been quite a task to secure hosting rights this year.
While staying tight lipped about any favourites Ms Martin says Hokonui Militaires from Gore are a team to keep an eye on.
Amanda Martin says two of the premiere events will be the Championship Plate March and Championship March on Saturday morning and afternoon respectively.
The Championships start today (Thurs) with an official march past and welcome at 2pm. All the events are under cover at the ILT Velodrome.
Get along and support our Southland Marchers, they’ve worked long and hard to compete at the Nationals.
