A person is in a critical condition after a rubbish truck rolled on State Highway 96 in Southland this morning, blocking the road.

Emergency services were called shortly before 11.30am at the highway’s intersection Chisholm Rd and State Highway 96 between Winton and Hedgehope.

A police spokesperson said the driver appeared to be trapped and a helicopter was sent to the scene. St John Ambulance confirmed there was one person in a critical condition.

The Transport Agency said motorists travelling in the area should use an alternative route or delay their journey because the highway was blocked at Springhills.
