The male pedestrian hit by a vehicle on State Highway 8 north of Alexandra has died.
Emergency services were called to the scene on State Highway 8, near Airport Rd, about 5.30pm.
A St John spokeswoman said an ambulance arrived at the scene after receiving the call.
“We assessed the patient, but unfortunately he died at the scene,” she said.
It is understood the man, believed to be aged in his early 20s, got out of a car to cross the road when he was hit.
SH8 is closed between Alexandra and Clyde. Diversions are in place through Airport, Dunstan and Springvale roads.
“The road will remain closed for some time while the Serious Crash Unit carries out their investigation,” a police spokeswoman said.
The Police Serious Crash Unit is on the way to the scene.

A pedestrian is being airlifted to hospital in a critical condition after he was hit by a vehicle on State Highway 8 near Airport Road in Alexandra.
Police and ambulance were notified around 5.45pm.
State Highway 6 is closed between Alexandra and Clyde.
Diversions are in place through Airport Road, Dunstan Road and Springvale Road.
The Police Serious Crash Unit has ben advised.
