The Rotary Club of Invercargill North successfully completed an exceptional community project, the ‘Kids Playhouse Project’, surpassing all expectations. This initiative was a response to a global challenge by Rotary International President Gordon R. McInally, emphasizing the support of mental health and wellbeing in local communities.
The club’s unique approach involved building and raffling a children’s playhouse. This endeavor was aimed not only at fundraising but also at engaging club members in a hands-on project. The club collaborated with Invercargill Prison, where inmates constructed the playhouse, gaining valuable experience and expressing gratitude for participating in this community-focused project. Local businesses like ITM and Resene generously contributed materials and supplies at discounted rates or for free.
The playhouse, featuring exceptional design and finish, was sold through a raffle. Club members actively sold tickets in various locations around Invercargill, including markets, malls, and events like the Diwali Festival and the Christmas Race meeting at Ascot Park. The community’s response was overwhelmingly positive, with people admiring the playhouse and enthusiastically participating in the raffle.
The project culminated in a total of $25,000 raised, surpassing the club’s goal. The distribution of funds will see $13,000 (including $3,000 from Rotary District Funds) go to SYOSS, No. 10, and $5,000 each to Koha Kai and Hospice Southland. The raffle winners were Barry Stratford and Kathy Haren, with the tickets sold at Nichols Garden Centre.
This project stands as a testament to the power of community collaboration and the impact of proactive local initiatives in supporting crucial services like mental health and wellbeing.
