The re-roofing of Electricity Invercargill Limited’s (EIL) Leven Street substation began mid-February, with the project expected to be completed by April 2023.
PowerNet manages the EIL network, chief executive Jason Franklin says this maintenance work is vital to ensure a safe, efficient and reliable electricity supply is delivered to 17,500 customers connected to the network.
“With this reroofing project, Brazier Scaffolding has installed a large scaffold structure over the working area; it has been shrink-wrapped to protect the electricity assets enclosed within the building. The shrink-wrap will also allow Bragg Building & Design to work in any weather condition,” Jason said.
The Leven Street substation is situated next to The Warehouse and was built in 1983 and housed one 11.5kVA transformer and switchgear, and it also supplies the industrial area west of Invercargill’s CBD.
In 2003 with industry growth, a second 11.5 kVA transformer, switchgear, and associated electrical equipment were installed.
EIL has four Zone substations in Invercargill city, each fed by a high voltage 33kV underground cable from Transpower’s Grid Exit Point off Findlay Road. The EIL substation’s equipment converts the high voltage capacity to 11kV before it’s distributed underground to customers’ pillar boxes.
Electricity Invercargill Limited (EIL) provides a secure and future-proofed power supply to homes and businesses across the Invercargill City and Bluff township. To view EIL’s current Asset Management plan, visit EIL Asset management plan – PowerNet.
