Local businessman Tom Conroy today announced he will contest the Invercargill Mayoralty in the local government elections in October.

The 53-year-old television producer and presenter, who has lived and worked in Invercargill for 20 years, said he has been persuaded to stand by a number of city residents and business people.

“I thought long and hard before making this decision, so I’m now completely ready to hit the ground running and put everything I have into Invercargill. I’m very confident I can and will improve the fortunes of our great city”.

“I have lived in the heart of the city and run my own business in the CBD for many years, and its decline deeply worries me”.

“The steady stream of shops closing their doors and tired buildings are constant reminders that we must act fast, with fresh ideas, to recreate a heart and inject vibrancy, not just for the many visitors we need for the local economy, but also for the residents who want to feel proud of their home”.

“I have the background, skills, passion, motivation and entrepreneurial spirit to really lead this city forward. My strength is knowing how to turn an idea into reality, by building a team of good people who have great ideas and a commitment to carry them out”.

“My priority will be winning the respect and support of councillors, the hard-working council staff and local businesses, to help breathe new life into the city and make Invercargill a great place to live and work.”

With experience in the corporate world, Mr Conroy moved to Invercargill in 1996 on a six-month assignment and never left.

“Now I want to convince others to make that very same decision, to say no to the rat race, relocate to Invercargill, and enjoy a quality of life here that is unrivalled anywhere”.

“My proudest memory as a Southlander is our victorious recovery of the Ranfurly Shield in 2009.

Everyone remembers the euphoria, the street parade and school visits and the way the victory united the community. I’m committed to bringing back that pride and energy”.

“My clear vision for the city has inspired my candidacy for Mayor of Invercargill. My ideas are current, my time is now. It’s Time for Tom and I’m up for the challenge”.

Key Pledges:

  • Attract entrepreneurs to re-locate to Invercargill with a “Dragon’s Den” style contestable Innovators’ Fund
  • Champion the Southland Regional Development Strategy with the emphasis on outcomes, not just activity
  • Reject extravagant international junkets for councillors and officials in favour of closer relationships with our southern neighbours. It’s less about sister cities, more about brothers-in-arms.
  • Accelerate urban revitalisation and breathe new life into the city, partnering with the private sector and eliminating obstacles.
  • Greatly improve your experience of dealing with council, review the myriad of bylaws and slash red tape.
  • Provide strong, energetic and inspirational leadership.
