An earthquake of magnitude 6.8 struck south of New Zealand’s South Island on Tuesday night, the United States Geological Survey said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the quake, which hit 196 km (122 miles) northwest of Auckland Island, at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).

Civil Defence tweeted that there is no tsunami threat to New Zealand following the 6.8 magnitude earthquake in the Auckland Islands.

Emergency Management Southland appear to be a bit more on the case saying they are assessing the situation.

A timely reminder to check a few things like, have you got plenty of gas in the car in case you have to make a quick evacuation, batteries in torches up to the task, got some warm clothing ready for a quick get away, got a portable radio and has your gas bottle been topped up lately?

Sounds a bit alarmist we know but there are stores and gas stations open that supply most of this stuff
