For years a Kmart store has been on the wish list of many Invercargill residents, there has been rumours and chatter but nothing concrete confirmed by the Australian chains head office other than their standard line “Kmart are actively seeking a store location in Invercargill, however at this point in time”

At the media launch of the HWCP City Centre development on Monday this slide was displayed showing Kmart on the Clyde Street site (old Brownies) when asked why Kmart aren’t joining the party in the new city centre development, HWCP Chairman Scott O’ Donnell replied “Kmart seem to be moving away from malls and developing their own stand alone centres”

When whatsoninvers.nz contacted Kmarts Melbourne corporate office on Tuesday about the image and proposed store on Clyde Street, a Kmart spokesperson said they would have information and an image by lunchtime Wednesday (today)

Unfortunately at the 11th hour Kmart supplied the following statement

“I have spoken to the owners and there will be an update later this week, thanks for your patience here – many thanks”

So for now we have to run with the unofficial worse kept secret that Kmart will build a store on Clyde Street.

The proposed Kmart development is expected to include a Muffin Break cafe.

The Muffin Break franchise is still for sale here, which was advertised last year to be in the Kmart development.
