“It’s just another steering wheel,” says Garry Price on the eve of his NZ Super Truck racing debut at Teretonga Park in Invercargill this weekend.

Price, a transport operator from the small Central Southland town of Winton, is jumping in at the deep end as he takes on the regulars in the Super Truck Championship. He has only ever seen truck racing on television and had no burning desire to go racing in one of these machines despite being in the transport industry. However that changed when a texted photo of an International Transtar for sale on Trade Me arrived in the Price household and now a short time later Price will line up in Round 3 of the NZ Super Truck Championship this weekend.

Price’s motorsport background is in the world of speedway where he has “had a few wins and a few losses too over a lot of years. It’s a cruel sport,” he says. “I was sick of being away racing every weekend so decided to try this – it’s just another steering wheel.” Since purchasing the truck Price has rebuilt the whole engine. “Reliability is the key,” he says, “to win you have to finish.”

His goals for the weekend are quite simple. “I want to be in the front end not the back end of the field,” he says as he prepares to become the first Southlander to compete in the Super Trucks since Inky Tulloch.
