Invercargill is set to come alive with the rhythm and grace of traditional South Indian dance, with two exciting events hosted by the Invercargill Malayalees Association (IMA) this weekend. The first celebration will take place tomorrow, 14th September, at Verdon College Hall, starting at 10 AM. This cultural event will offer the public a glimpse into Kerala’s rich traditions, as the IMA continues its commitment to promoting Malayali culture in Southland.
On Sunday, 15th September, at 11:30 AM, IMA will present the highly anticipated Mega Thiruvathira performance at Invercargill Central. Thiruvathira, a centuries-old group dance from Kerala, India, is performed as part of the Onam festival, one of Kerala’s most significant celebrations. The dance, known for its elegant circular formations and rhythmic footwork, is traditionally performed by women and reflects Kerala’s harmony, history, and cultural vibrancy.
Kerala, a state on India’s southwestern coast, is renowned for its scenic landscapes and diverse cultural traditions. The Mega Thiruvathira performance in Invercargill will bring this cultural richness to the heart of Southland, offering a unique opportunity for the community to experience the beauty of South Indian heritage.
Both events highlight IMA’s ongoing efforts to foster cultural exchange and unity by sharing the traditions of Kerala with the wider Southland community. The public is warmly invited to participate in these celebrations and enjoy the sights and sounds of Kerala’s vibrant culture.
