Matatu and Rugby Southland have announced a thrilling development for rugby fans: Invercargill will host the first round of the Super Rugby Aupiki season in 2024. This event marks a significant moment as it will be the first time Matatū plays in Southland, a region they proudly represent.

Sarah Munro, Matatu General Manager, shared her enthusiasm, saying, “It’s such an exciting opportunity to take a game to Invercargill as part of our season this year.” She emphasized the team’s eagerness to play for their South Island fans and the excitement of facing the Blues at Rugby Park in front of a passionate Southland audience.

The defending champions, Matatu, are set to build on their impressive performance and culture, which have been developing since Aupiki’s inaugural season in 2022. Emma Dermody, a Southlander and Matatu’s Rookie of the Year in 2023, expressed her elation about playing in her home province. She highlighted the game’s importance in demonstrating potential pathways to young girls in the region.

Amy Rule and Amy du Plessis, foundational players for Matatu and capped Black Ferns, are both from Southland and shared their excitement about the team’s southern journey.

The event’s success is largely attributed to the support from the Invercargill Licensing Trust (ILT), Community Trust South (CTS), and Rugby Southland. Steve Mitchell, CEO of Rugby Southland, expressed his pleasure in delivering a high-quality women’s game at Rugby Park. He anticipates the event on March 2nd to be an extraordinary display of female rugby talent in Invercargill.

Acknowledging the collaborative effort, Mitchell said, “Our staff, board and members are excited by this opportunity and acknowledge the support of the ILT and CTS in securing this event for Invercargill. We also acknowledge the excitement, collaboration and positive partnership developing between ourselves and Matatu as we work towards hosting this great event.”

Jackie Flutey, CEO of CTS, spoke of their honor in contributing to this historic milestone, emphasizing the investment’s impact beyond just the game. Angee Shand from ILT remarked on the positive effects this match will have for local players and the growth of women’s rugby in the community.
