• Key Invercargill roads to get fresh asphalt in summer 2024/2025.
  • Overnight work planned to minimise disruption for businesses and road users.
  • Infrastructure upgrades coordinated to streamline improvements and reduce long-term impacts.

Invercargill’s central city roads are set to undergo significant resurfacing, with fresh asphalt being laid on Dee, Tay, and Clyde Streets along State Highways 1 and 6. The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) aims to complete the work by the end of the 2024/2025 summer season, ensuring smoother roads for the community.

To minimise disruptions, crews will work overnight from Sunday to Thursday, between 6 pm and 6 am. This schedule aims to keep businesses and daytime traffic flowing smoothly. The resurfacing will kick off at Troopers roundabout on 5 January, moving through Tay Street, Dee Street, and Clyde Street, concluding with the Tweed Street roundabout.

The project will use approximately 8,500 tonnes of asphalt—equivalent in weight to 120 million cheese rolls. Some work was delayed in recent years to accommodate other developments like the Invercargill Central redevelopment and Langlands Hotel construction. With those projects complete, road surfaces are now due for attention.

To maximise efficiency, NZTA is coordinating with Invercargill City Council and contractors to align infrastructure upgrades. This includes repairing footpaths, and installing water, stormwater, and wastewater pipes before applying the final asphalt layers. While residents might notice crews returning to the same areas, this is part of a carefully staged process designed to reduce long-term disruption and maintain safety.

NZTA is encouraging locals to continue visiting the central city throughout the works. Drivers are advised to allow extra time for parking, and any detours will be clearly marked to ease navigation.

The roadworks, scheduled to finish by late February or early March 2024, will pause for the Burt Munro Rally weekend in early February. However, progress will depend on weather conditions.

Meanwhile, Invercargill City Council is completing its own infrastructure repairs before Christmas and into January, including:

  • Tay/Kelvin Street stormwater upgrades in November and December.
  • Dee/Leet Street stormwater repairs in November.
  • Clyde/Forth Street wastewater and water main works by January’s end.

These efforts will pave the way for Invercargill to enjoy upgraded infrastructure and smoother roads for years to come.
