• Invercargill’s Civic Theatre named finalist in two 2025 EVANZ Awards categories
  • Theatre recognised for community work and commitment to heritage and innovation
  • Senior Technician Josh Clive shortlisted for outstanding performance in venue operations

Invercargill’s Civic Theatre has been named a finalist in two major categories for the upcoming 2025 Entertainment Venues Association of New Zealand (EVANZ) Awards.

The theatre is in the running for Medium Venue of the Year, which highlights excellence in venues with fewer than 5000 seats. Meanwhile, Civic Theatre Senior Technician Josh Clive has been named a finalist for Team Member of the Year, which recognises individuals who have shown exceptional dedication and professionalism in the sector over the past year.

Invercargill City Council Manager Venues and Events Jason Wade said the nominations were a proud moment for the Civic Theatre team and acknowledged the hard work of everyone involved.

“We put people at the heart of everything we do,” he said.
“Whether it’s through our efforts to make art and culture accessible to everyone, our goals to strategically grow as an entertainment venue, or the way we honour the building’s heritage, our staff, performers and visitors are vital to the Civic Theatre’s success.”

The theatre’s nomination focused on community involvement, such as free public events, a community access programme, and consistently high client satisfaction. It also highlighted the venue’s innovative approach to asset management.

“The Civic Theatre is Invercargill’s Grand Old Dame and one of New Zealand’s most iconic heritage venues,” Wade said.
“We’ve worked hard to upgrade the facility in a way that respects its architectural and cultural significance while meeting modern standards for safety, accessibility and performance.
“It’s a model of how tradition and innovation can coexist.”

Clive’s nomination for Team Member of the Year celebrates his strong technical expertise and dedication to team success.

“Josh brings technical skill and creativity to the workplace, and is a wonderful example of what it means to be a great team player,” Wade said.
“He thoroughly deserves to win Team Member of the Year.”

The winners of the 2025 EVANZ Awards will be announced at a ceremony in Hamilton on Thursday 20 November.
