Stephen O’Connor, a leading figure in New Zealand’s financial advice sector based in Invercargill, has received the prestigious 2025 Noel Maye Award from the Financial Planning Standards Board (FPSB), recognising his outstanding contribution to the global financial planning profession.

Presented at the FPSB Global Meeting in Chicago, the award celebrates individuals who have significantly advanced financial planning and CFP certification through leadership, service, and advocacy. O’Connor, along with Lelané Bezuidenhout from South Africa, was honoured in front of an international audience of more than 70 financial planning leaders.

FPSB CEO Dante De Gori said, “The FPSB Noel Maye Award is the pinnacle of recognition in the global financial planning profession, acknowledging individuals who embody values of service, vision and commitment that define our community.”

O’Connor, who became a CFP professional in 1996, has spent decades shaping the financial planning profession in New Zealand and abroad. He has held senior roles with both local professional associations and FPSB, including Chair of the FPSB Board of Directors and Council. Under his leadership, FPSB saw the development of lasting governance systems and a stronger international network.

Reflecting on the honour, O’Connor said, “I am deeply humbled to receive this recognition. I’ve always believed in giving back to my profession and the financial planning community has given me incredible opportunities and lifelong connections. This award isn’t just mine — it reflects the support I have received from both my family and my colleagues, as well as the privilege to have served alongside so many incredible people who believe in the value of financial advice.”

Financial Advice New Zealand CEO Nick Hakes praised the achievement, saying, “This recognition underscores that Financial Advice New Zealand is not only shaping the future of advice here at home but is actively contributing to the development of global standards and the advancement of the financial advice profession.”

The organisation continues to play an influential role in FPSB’s global network, reinforcing New Zealand’s reputation for integrity, professionalism and innovation in financial advice.

Financial Advice New Zealand is the country’s largest professional body representing financial advisers, working to ensure Kiwis can access trusted guidance in financial planning, lending, and insurance.
