The Y’s indoor stadium is set for a facelift, with the inner-city space set to be completely renovated and modernised in early 2024.
The Y’s Tay Street building includes a full indoor basketball court, behind the fitness centre.

Although much loved and well used by community groups, it is in need of remediation and now – thanks to the generosity of key funders – that is set to become a reality.
Funding from the Murihiku Rūnaka and Rio Tinto/NZAS Community Development Fund, Community Trust South, ILT Foundation and Lottery Community Facilities has all contributed to bring the project to fruition, with work getting underway within the next couple of weeks.

Y Southland Chief Executive Pete Thompson says the stadium redevelopment is hugely exciting for the Y, and he was looking forward to the modernised space being available for community bookings by June 2024.

.

“We are so lucky to have a full indoor stadium right in the centre of Invercargill, and this project to redevelop the space will ensure it is modernised, fit for purpose, and is a real asset for community groups and stadium users for many years to come,” he says.

“We are also so lucky to have such generous support from funders to make this possible.
While it’s not quite a rebuild, it’s close to it, and the brand-new floor, in particular, will make a huge difference.”
All going well, the redeveloped stadium will be open for community bookings from June 2024.

Work is due to start in the next couple of weeks, and the Y is looking to minimise disruption for existing facility users as much as possible.
