Preparations are underway for this year’s Diwali festival in Invercargill - a global celebration of light and unity.
Held at the ILT Stadium Southland on Saturday from 11 am to 7 pm, there will be performances from Auckland dance group Khottey Sikkey, who will be doing everything from Bollywood numbers to Interactive sessions.
Indian Community Southland Inc president Anu John said hosts for the day are RJ Jibby and RJ Krish from the KJ Local group in Christchurch, who will entertain the whole day.
“We also have the Belly dancers from the Timila dance group in Christchurch.”
Anu said this year they are focusing more on cultural integration using different art forms, from all across India and including other countries as well.
“We have loads of local community events from kids practicing for some traditional Indian dance numbers to support from all communities, with Samoan performance from the Lili, Columbian dance from the Patrioka dance group and Philippine dance group.”
Like any good festival, there will be loads of food stalls, activity areas for children, a bouncy castle, face painting and photo booth.
The event promises a day of cultural immersion, lively performances, and delectable cuisine, creating an unforgettable experience for the Southland community.
Diwali symbolises a triumph of light over darkness, and is celebrated throughout India and across the world.
It holds profound cultural significance as families come together, light lamps, exchange gifts, and partake in rituals that represent hope, unity, and the triumph of righteousness.
