Invercargill’s Ascot Park Hotel was the venue last night for the first of ILT’s two Christmas dinners dedicated to residents over the age of 70. This event marked the beginning of the festive season, providing a special evening for the senior members of the community.
The event, a staple in Invercargill’s holiday calendar, welcomed 700 guests to enjoy a sumptuous three-course dinner. The atmosphere was further enhanced by local performers, including the Invercargill Garrison Band, the award-winning Jump Jam group from Waihopai School, and vocalist Lydia Bloomfield. Additionally, Margaret Bates, known for her musical prowess, played the keyboard, adding to the event’s charm.
The dinner was made even more special by the involvement of ILT’s board members and staff, who volunteered their time to serve the guests.
Paddy O’Brien, the ILT President, expressed the board and staff’s excitement for the event, highlighting it as a yearly highlight and a chance to connect with and honor the senior community for their lasting contributions to Invercargill.
Chris Ramsay, ILT’s Chief Executive, shared similar sentiments, emphasizing the joy of hosting the Christmas dinners and the organization’s commitment to supporting community members at all stages of their lives. “We are here to take care of them so they can relax for the evening,” he remarked.
The Christmas dinner tradition, which started in 1993, has become a cherished event. Every year, residents over 70 are invited to apply, with lucky attendees selected randomly to enjoy the festivities. Over the years, ILT has served more than 25,000 meals at these memorable Christmas events, making it a significant occasion for the community.
