The ILT is starting to feel the pinch of the cost of living crisis, but hasn’t given up throwing big parties in the CBD.

There’s some great events underway in downtown Invercargill, with ‘throwback’ parties at some of its inner city bars.

ILT held its monthly meeting on October 2, and chief executive Chris Ramsay said in the monthly report, that earnings before donations and tax of $539K was $70k down on last August.

“These impacts of increased competition and cost-of-living on revenue have now become evident in our profit results. For the first time this financial year (FY) our monthly result, August, was behind the same month last year.”

He said with reduced conference and event activity, along with increased competition, they anticipate the decline will continue in September.

A Blast From The Past in Downtown Invercargill
A series of ILT pubs and establishments around Invercargill are teleporting back into their past lives - being recreated for a night to give the community a taste of nostalgia. And judging by the comments on social media, the initiative has gone viral, with some Facebook posts already getting up

“Whilst we know the challenges we are currently facing will continue, we know we are managing these challenges as well as anyone in our industry, with our bottom-line profit holding up very well and up almost half a million on the same period last year. We feel the importance of this, as we know what we make goes directly back to our community.”

The recent ‘throwback’ parties with several pubs transforming into their former identities, such as the Frog n Firkin, The Kiln at Waxy's boosted income earnings, with strong turnouts reported so far at all events, and social media gaining up to 120,000 views.

There’s still fun to come with the Lone Star’s Bring Back Barluca on the 11th, Molly’s upstairs at Level One (Kelvin Hotel) on the 25th, and a big Halloween celebration in the  city centre on the 31st.

“These events highlight Invercargill’s unique hospitality history and give everyone even more reasons to visit our venues,” he said.
