• ILT hosted a Christmas dinner for Invercargill residents aged over 70 years.
  • Guests enjoyed a three-course meal, live entertainment, and warm community connection.
  • Over 25,000 meals served since the event began in 1993.

ILT hosted the first of two Christmas dinners for Invercargill residents aged over 70 at the Ascot Park Hotel last night. The festive occasion brought together 700 guests for an evening of food, entertainment, and community spirit.

The celebration included a three-course meal, complemented by lively performances from New River Primary School’s Ukulele group and Invercargill Musical Theatre members. Crowd favourite Margaret Bates added her signature charm with a memorable keyboard performance.

ILT board members and staff volunteered their time to serve guests, a gesture that embodies the organisation’s commitment to fostering community connections. ILT President Paddy O’Brien described the event as a highlight of the year.

“The board and staff look forward to this event every year, it really is a highlight for us,” said O’Brien. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with this part of the community and recognise the ongoing contribution they make to our city.”

Chief Executive Chris Ramsay echoed these sentiments, adding, “We are thrilled to host the Christmas dinners again this year. It is a fun occasion for both our guests and our volunteers.”

“With the rising cost of living, this year’s event feels even more special. We are pleased to offer our guests a wonderful night out – all at no cost to them,” Ramsay said.

Since its inception in 1993, ILT’s Christmas dinners have become a cherished tradition. Each year, Invercargill residents over 70 are invited to apply for a place at the event, with attendees chosen through a random draw. Over the past three decades, the initiative has provided more than 25,000 meals, spreading joy and celebrating the city’s seniors.
