If early summer figures are anything to go by, the southern tourism industry looks to be onto a winner

Figures just released by Venture Southland show that visitor numbers to Southland were up 3.6 per cent for the year ended 30 November over the previous year

Just over 404 hundred thousand domestic and international visitors had a look at the province and stayed a night or two.

Both domestic and international guest nights saw healthy increases on the previous 12 months.

While the figures are buoyant for Southland they are outstanding for Fiordland.

The figures show a 9.2% increase in visitor numbers for the 12 months to the end of November over the previous 12 months.

The figures show that just a whisker short of 540 thousand visitors from home and abroad visited the natural paradise over the 12 months to the end of November 2015

The natural wonderland is proving to be a huge magnet for international visitors with international guest nights increasing 16.1 per cent and domestic guest nights increasing by just under 7 per cent.

How these figures stack up in dollar terms should be available toward the end of the current tourist season but its easy to see that tourism is playing a vital and considerable income stream for the south.
