William Todd and Co auctioneers co-director Lynzy Francis said this was, without a doubt, an auction not seen on this scale before.

“It’s extremely exciting,” he said.

H&J Smiths commercial manager Morris Gilbertson said the first auction on Saturday April 6 would feature all of the fixtures and fittings of the building that they displayed their products for sale.

With 150 lots and 2000 items, an entire catalogue with photos has been dedicated to the auction, which can be viewed on the William Todd and Co website, or in person at viewings on Thursday and Friday after Easter (3-6pm).

“He’s set me quite a big challenge,” Lynzy said. “But an auction should sell everything, and everything has a price,” he said.

A second auction would likely be held in May for more of the back office items such as, furniture, tools, whiteboards, trollies and ladders.

“As you could imagine in a store this size, there is a fair amount of assets that we have accumulated over the 123 years in business,” Morris said.

Much of the stationery was donated to schools and early childhood centres around the city, but there were still plenty of staplers and sellotape holders that needed a home.

“It’s not until you bring it all together that you realise the size of it all.”

Morris was involved in similar auctions for the Dunedin and Gore stores, and the company had a zero waste tolerance, as they wish to recycle as much as they can.

“The auction and the products dictates what sort of people that will come. Nothing beats a live auction. It’s a special thing and such a passion of mine,” Lynzy said.
