A rail car not seen before in the south visited the region today (Wednesday 20th March) and will be staying the night in Invercargill.

The Standard rail car is coming to Invercargill part of a South Island excursion.

The Standard , owned and operated by the Pahiatua RailCar Society was a model proudly built by the old New Zealand Railways and entered service in the late 1930’s to provide rail passenger transport around the North Island.

They were withdrawn in the early 70’s. Several like the railcar coming on Wednesday have been preserved and are run by rail heritage organisations.

The Standard Railcar leaves Dunedin at 8.25 Wednesday morning to pull in at Invers at 12noon.

The return trip departs Invers at 9.05am on Thursday morning to be in Gore at 10.15 then back to be at Mataura at 10.40 then depart for Gore at 11.50 to depart for Dunedin at 12.10pm.
