A strong wind warning has been issued for Fiordland, Southland, and Stewart Island, with severe gale-force winds forecast to affect the region overnight. The warning is in place from 8pm on Tuesday, 28 January, through to 6am on Wednesday, 29 January.

North to northwesterly winds are expected to reach gusts of up to 120 km/h in exposed areas. While the chance of this weather event being upgraded to a Red Warning is low, residents and travellers are advised to take precautions due to potential impacts.

The strong winds could cause damage to trees, powerlines, and unsecured structures, making conditions hazardous. Motorists, particularly those driving high-sided vehicles or motorcycles, are warned to expect challenging conditions on the roads.

Authorities recommend securing any outdoor items that could be blown away and preparing for possible power outages. Drivers should reduce speed and exercise extra caution, especially when driving through open or elevated areas where winds will be strongest.
