Michelle Henderson has been appointed as the new General Manager of New Zealand Aluminium Smelters (NZAS), returning to lead the Tiwai-based operation where she began her career. She will officially take up the role on 28 January 2026, with Matt Black continuing as Acting General Manager until then.

Michelle brings over two decades of leadership experience in the engineering and energy sectors, including senior roles at Rio Tinto and as Chief Operating Officer at PowerNet. Her early career included roles at Tiwai as a graduate engineer, shift crew leader, and superintendent before taking on global positions within Rio Tinto.

She also holds significant governance experience, having served as an independent director on the boards of Meridian Energy, South Port, New Zealand Post, and previously Fulton Hogan. A Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Directors NZ, she was named Leader of the Year in 2019 by the NZ Safeguard Business Leaders Health and Safety Forum, recognising her strong commitment to safety and sustainability.

Currently based in Southland, Michelle is closely connected to the local community through her governance roles and past volunteer work, including as a trustee for Youthline Southland.

Rio Tinto Aluminium Pacific Operations Managing Director Armando Torres said, “Michelle’s deep operational experience, strong governance background, and connection to Southland make her an outstanding choice to lead NZAS, into its next phase, following the securing of the smelter’s future. Her leadership will help us continue to provide value for our global customers, our team, our partners in Southland and the local community.

“Her appointment also reinforces Rio Tinto’s commitment to Southland and its people, ensuring the smelter continues to play a positive role in the region’s economy and community, including ensuring we meet all our environmental commitments.

“I have appreciated the leadership and support of Matt Black who has acted in the General Manager role since May.”

Michelle Henderson said, “I am really excited to return to Rio Tinto and Tiwai, and to be working with the great team at NZAS as we enter the next chapter for this iconic New Zealand business. The smelter plays a vital role in Southland’s economy, and I look forward to connecting with our many partners and stakeholders in Southland and New Zealand. Low carbon aluminium has never been more important globally, and Tiwai’s role in helping provide the metal the world needs for the energy transition, is something all New Zealanders can be proud of.”

Before stepping into her new role, Michelle will resign from her board positions at Meridian Energy and South Port.
