Helicopter Golf Ball Drop For YES Scheme

The best fundraiser ‘par none’ is happening at the Invercargill Golf Club this Friday.
Southland Business Chamber events manager Leanne Humphrey came up with the idea of dropping 1500 golf balls from a helicopter into the middle of the green – to raise money for the Southland Young Enterprise Scheme (YES).
The scheme gives high school students, like recent winner Aubrey Page, from Southland Boys’ High School, the opportunity to create a business idea, and make it fly in the real world.
The Year 12 student has been selling Eco-friendly toothpaste tablets under his brand Eco Smile since May.
Leanne said the golf fundraiser is to help fund the planning of the Southland Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) for 2023.
The closest ball to the ‘X’ on the green wins $1000, and there are also Air New Zealand travel vouchers for second and third.
She said Southland Helicopters had generously donated their helicopter and time, “and it will be quite spectacular to watch.”
Otatara Primary School students will then run onto the green and clear the balls away, so the ‘Ambrose Golf’ tournament can start, which includes teams of four.
“It’s something a little bit different,” she said.
Gourmet pies, local craft beer, croissants and a barbecue from local businesses will all be provided for refreshments for those partaking in the golf tournament to follow.
Tickets for the ball drop can be purchased from the Chamber office or online at https://southlandchamber.co.nz/events/63103/
Leanne will be heading to Wellington with Aubrey on December 6 for the National YES event, to pitch his business to the judges, and compete against other students from 20 other regions around the country.
The Helicopter Golf Ball Drop will take place at 12:30pm, at the SBS Bank Invercargill Golf Club, with tee off for the golf tournament starting at 12.50pm.
