Former Prime Minister the Rt Hon Helen Clark will be speaking in Invercargill next month to mark 125 years since women won the right to vote.
Clark will be having a conversation about her extraordinary life and career at the KIND Women event on Wednesday, October 17 at Centrestage Theatre.
KIND Women Organiser Becs Amundsen said it was an honour to be hosting the former United Nations Development Programme leader and to hear first-hand her experiences as one of New Zealand’s most influential women.
“Helen once said women needed to roll out their own carpet and kick in the door, which is exactly what KIND women is about,” Amundsen said.
“2018 makes 125 years since women got the right to vote, but we still have a way to go yet, and by having Helen speak, we hope to empower Southland women to reach our end-goal – of equality,” she said.
KIND Women is an extraordinarily random mix of Southland women who have been united by their desire to encourage and serve their community.
A second KIND Women event is planned for Saturday 3 November. The Southland Women’s Hui is a day for women to get together to talk their experiences, equality, how to live the lives they want to, to support and empower each other and to build a strong network of women in our community.
The day will follow the unconference style – so participants will determine what is talked about, learned and shared.
