A burst of heavy rain for the south and west of the South Island and gales for parts of the South Island and the far south of the North Island.

A front is expected to move northeast over the South Island overnight Thursday and Friday morning bringing a burst of heavy rain to western and southern areas.

Forecast: Periods of heavy rain. Rainfall amounts may approach warning criteria e.g. 50mm in 12 hours for Southland and 40mm in 12 hours for Clutha).
