Hawthorndale Care Village has appointed a clinical leader with more than two decades of aged care experience to its board, as the Invercargill facility moves into what it describes as its next stage of development.
Jill Smith joins as a trustee, bringing a background spanning aged residential care, hospice, community nursing and clinical governance. She currently works as Regional Clinical and Quality Manager for Heritage Lifecare, supporting eight facilities across the lower South Island.
Hawthorndale models itself on the De Hogeweyk philosophy — an internationally recognised approach to dementia care that organises village life around everyday routines rather than clinical systems. Residents are supported to maintain independence and stay connected to community, rather than fitting into a traditional care environment.
Board chair Mike Wyeth said the appointment reflects where the organisation is now focused.
"Hawthorndale Care Village was founded with a vision to redefine what's possible in dementia care and aged care. We've now moved from establishing that vision to strengthening the way we operate every day."
"As the Village continues to mature, strong clinical governance becomes even more important. Jill brings extensive experience and thoughtful leadership. She'll be a tremendous addition to our Board as we continue building on the foundations already in place," Wyeth said.
Smith said the model drew her in.

Wyeth said getting the right expertise around the board table is part of a longer commitment. "Establishing the Village was only the beginning. Our responsibility now is to continue building on that foundation. Bringing the right expertise around the Board table is an important part of that commitment."
Smith will attend her first board meeting virtually while overseas, before joining fellow trustees in person at the following meeting.
