Southland is gearing up to welcome some of the world’s toughest endurance athletes as Gore hosts the MAGNIficent Adventure Race from 28 February to 7 March 2026.

Part of the internationally recognised Adventure Racing World Series (ARWS), the race brings together elite co-ed teams of four to compete non-stop across over 600 kilometres of remote terrain. Racers will run, bike, and pack raft their way through dense bush, wild coastlines, and rugged high country throughout Southland and Otago.

Following a successful 2025 event in Lumsden, this year’s race marks Gore’s debut as the official host town. Backed by the Gore District Council, the event headquarters will be based at the Gore Town & Country Club, providing a central hub for athletes, organisers, and supporters.

Race Director Andy Magness said Gore was selected thanks to its “stunning landscapes and strong community support.” He added, “The Magnificent Expedition is more than a race – it’s an adventure that pushes boundaries and creates unforgettable memories. We’re thrilled to bring this event to Gore and showcase the incredible terrain Southland and Otago has to offer.”

He also acknowledged the support of local council staff: “Their help in planning and logistics has been invaluable in making this event possible.”

Gore Mayor Ben Bell welcomed the opportunity to bring international attention to the region. “Events like this highlight the beauty and spirit of Southland. We’re proud to welcome competitors and visitors to experience not only the race but everything our region has to offer,” he said.

The MAGNIficent Adventure Race operates under strict ARWS rules with official referees. It is an unsupported race, meaning teams must rely solely on their own planning and skills. Competitors receive no outside help and are responsible for managing their own food, equipment, rest, and even medical care throughout the journey. Race staff only transport pre-packed resupply gear to transition zones.

The stakes are high – the winning team will earn a free spot at the 2026 Adventure Racing World Championships in Corsica, France. Last year’s champions, Team Sardines, went on to place fourth in the 2025 World Championships in British Columbia, Canada.

Locals are encouraged to get involved – from volunteering behind the scenes to cheering on athletes at key locations like Dolomore Park and T1 near the Gore bridge. Community members can even cycle with racers as they depart on Sunday morning. Live tracking will be available throughout the week at www.themagnificentnz.com
