It’s not often that golf and cocktails go together, but at the Winton Golf Club they are a perfect match.
It’s all part of a new beginners’ golf programme in the town, where participants, new to the sport of golf, receive weekly lessons and a cocktail and nibbles to finish the night. To say it’s been popular is an understatement, with about 90 women registering for the club’s new “Ladies Love Golf” programme.
Winton Golf Club vice president Barbara Wilson said they were thrilled with the success.
“It’s been wonderful seeing lots of ladies out learning a new sport and enjoying themselves.”
And she hoped that some would catch the golfing bug and continue enjoying the sport.
“It would be great to think that some of these ladies will join the club and continue. It’s an investment in the future.”
Golf Southland’s Simon Borland has provided free coaching and he said he thought the response had been excellent.
“This is outstanding. Winton is leading the way and it’s great for the sport.”
First time golfer Emma Heatherington said she was also enjoying being involved.
“It’s a fun thing to do – something different and great to play with friends.”
