Southlanders big and small are invited to get up close and personal with the fascinating creatures that live in our waterways at upcoming events in Invercargill and Winton next week.

Two public events will run alongside four days of exclusive school sessions, giving over 320 Murihiku Southland students from 14 schools the chance to learn about marine life and water quality in an engaging, hands-on way.

The week-long activities are proudly supported by the NZ Marine Studies Centre, Environment Southland, Sunrise Rotary, and Thriving Southland.

Dive into the Aquavan Experience
This is a fantastic opportunity for students and families to explore marine ecosystems with the help of the purpose-built Aquavan – a mobile marine learning experience equipped with chilled seawater tanks and a mobile touch tank. The Aquavan safely transports living marine creatures to classrooms and community halls across Otago and Southland, giving participants the chance to see, touch, and learn about these fascinating critters up close.

Come along to:

  • See the Aquavan and real sea creatures
  • Learn about marine ecosystems through fun experiments
  • Discover how activities on land impact rivers and coastal environments
  • Chat with experts working to restore and protect these vital ecosystems
