A legend is coming home. Invercargill has a thing with wheels – and
New Zealand’s premier destination for petrolheads is set to add another jewel to the crown.
Southlander George Begg has been dubbed motorsport’s equivalent to Enzo Ferrari, and a city-wide celebration of the legendary engineer is set to take centre stage between 13 – 16 February 2020. Spectator packages to the first-ever celebration of Begg are now on sale. Fans keen to be part of history in the making are encouraged to secure their spot quickly.
Classic Motorcycle Mecca will soon be home to a stunning new George Begg exhibit, as part of the city’s tribute to the motorsport great. The George Begg Classic Speedfest will also be held at Teretonga Park.
Invercargill’s Begg celebrations are a collaboration between Transport World and the Southland Sports Car Club. Southland Sports Car Club promotions officer Lindsay Beer says February’s festivities is an opportunity for fans to celebrate a Southland hero.
“It seems only fitting that, as a region, we pay tribute to one of our standout motorsport figures by bringing two days of racing to Southland’s home of motorsport at Teretonga Park. We’re looking forward to our community getting in behind the story of one of our greats,” he says.
Transport World director Scott O’Donnell says Begg’s rise on the world-stage played a pivotal role in Kiwi motorsport’s glory days. “We think there are three great automotive personalities who have carved their names into Southland’s history books – Bill Richardson, Burt Munro and George Begg. Together, the George Begg Classic Speedfest and the George Begg exhibit at Classic Motorcycle Mecca pays homage to a story of Kiwi ingenuity taking on the world, and coming out on top.”
THE VISION 2021 & BEYOND
We want this to be a must-see event for everybody. The experience will combine top-notch racing with a retro festival atmosphere. We’re talking plenty of action on and off the track – live music, old-time fashion, plenty of food and drink options to get you in a party mood, and a vibe that is completely unique to Southland.
Long-term, we want the George Begg Classic Speedfest to be an event people just can’t miss. It’s going to be a petrolhead’s paradise, and we look forward to sharing it with you.
