Galer Beats Hawkins in Nail-Biting Dunedin Vote

Jo Galer has narrowly won the Dunedin City Council by-election by just 89 votes, marking one of the closest electoral contests in the city's recent history.

Galer secured 10,201 votes to defeat former mayor Aaron Hawkins, who received 10,112 votes in the race to fill the council seat left vacant by the death of Councillor and former mayor Jules Radich earlier this year.

The tight margin highlights the competitive nature of the contest, with less than 1% separating the two leading candidates.

Voter turnout reached approximately 33%, reflecting typical engagement levels for local body by-elections across New Zealand.

Galer is scheduled to be sworn in as the newest Dunedin City Councillor during Monday's council meeting, where she will formally take up the role previously held by Radich.

The by-election was called following Radich's death, creating the need to fill the council position through a special election rather than waiting until the next scheduled local body elections.

Hawkins, who previously served as Dunedin's mayor, was considered a strong contender given his political experience and name recognition in the city. However, Galer's grassroots campaign proved successful in securing the narrow victory.
