An active front, preceded by gale westerlies and followed by gale southwesterlies, is forecast to move north across southern and central New Zealand during tonight (Saturday), and then move away to the east on Sunday.
Motorists should also drive with care and be aware of surface flooding a Police spokesperson said.
A Watch is in place for the possibility of west to southwest gales becoming severe in exposed coastal parts of Dunedin, Clutha, Southland and Stewart Island.
People are advised to stay up to date with the latest forecasts in case parts of this Watch are upgraded to a full Warning or new areas are added.
