FENTON, Sylvia:
Immaculate and articulate, Sylvia made a huge impact in so many spheres of her life and her community. A South Canterbury Savings Bank (August 1964) foundation employee, she rose to the position of Westpac Branch Manager which she held until her retirement in 1997 (her stories of women in banking in the ’60’s are incredible)! She guided and inspired hundreds of young people, particularly young women, throughout the decades. A busy professional, Sylvia was also dedicated to many community organisations. She was a founding member and Charter President of the Zonta Club of Timaru (1989), serving also as Treasurer. She was instrumental in creating the South Canterbury Women’s Loan (Angel) Fund. She held a life long, passionate belief in the rights and opportunities of women, together with women’s ability to have financial independence – a belief she determinedly instilled in her daughter Karyn (Fenton-Ellis MNZM) and granddaughters Lydia (Roseby) and Julia-Rose (Hayes). The Arts held particular interest: a South Canterbury Drama League supporter and volunteer, the local arts’ council distribution fund was also a benefactor of her financial acumen. Family, friends and her beloved canine companions filled her life with joy, before dementia stole so many memories that were precious to her. Our heartfelt gratitude to the team at The Croft for its care over the past 4.5 years. We invite her friends to join her family in celebrating the inspirational life of Sylvia, there is so much more to share – Tuesday August 16 (her birthday) at Bett’s Funeral Services, 33 North Street, Timaru at 2pm.
