A fuel tanker driver escaped without major injuries after his vehicle rolled in Southland this morning.

Emergency services were called at 5.32am after the tanker rolled on State Highway 6 between Lumsden and Five Rivers.

A section of the road is closed and police say it will remain closed for much of the morning while the tanker is removed from the scene.

Diversions were in place at the intersection of State Highway 6 and State Highway 94, following the crash that occurred between Lumsden and Five Rivers.
A second diversion was in place at the intersection of State Highway 6 and Ellis Road.
