Anybody on two wheels in the city this week can take advantage of free parking in Invercargill Central, during the Burt Munro Challenge.

Marketing manager Rebecca Sheppard said from Wednesday to Sunday, Invercargill Central has made available the 650 parks on all four floors to motorbike riders for no charge.

“We hope that those visiting to attend the Burt Munro Challenge will also have time to explore the central city and we want to make this as easy as possible. Offering free parking is our way to welcome visitors to Invercargill and give them time to take in and appreciate the positive changes to our city since their last visit.”

After being cancelled last year due because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the annual event is set to attract 10,000+ visitors into the city, including from England, Wales, America and Australia.

Last year’s cancellation was the first since the event started in 2006.

Meanwhile, numbers of visitors to the centre have continued to increase month on month since it first opened in July last year.

Rebecca said they were very pleased with visitor numbers which peaked in December with over 52,000 cars using the car parking – the busiest trading day being December 23, followed by Boxing Day.

“Our retailers are trading well, many noting that their sales are well beyond expectations and targets, some topping the national table against their same brand stores. We’re looking forward to our next stage of confirmed retailers opening over the next couple of months.”

Stage two of Invercargill Central involved a lot more fashion retailers and the first of the food outlets in ‘Esk Eats,’ with several new ones also coming onboard in the next month for Stage Three.

These include Banh Mi (Vietnamese street food), Noodle Noodle, Bubble Tea and sushi – all new to Invercargill, along with Flawless Face & Beauty, Majestic Tea House, Luxurious Spa & Nails, Tech Pro, Sassy and Sole Addiction.

Postie and Vodafone and also relocating into the mall, and by the end of March shoppers will be able to take advantage of the entire complex, when the full loop is finally opened up.
