• Josh Burnett returns to the SBS Bank Tour of Southland after making history in 2022.
  • The race director highlights the tour's role in Burnett's career, predicting his European success.
  • Young riders like Marshall Erwood and James Gardner are expected to shine in this year's event.

Josh Burnett, a 23-year-old professional rider, is set to return to the SBS Bank Tour of Southland this November. Burnett, who made headlines in 2022 by becoming the first local cyclist since 1994 to win the prestigious event, is back on the start line after missing the 2023 edition due to study and race commitments.

This return comes shortly after Burnett secured a place with the Spanish pro-continental team Burgos BH, marking his resurgence in international cycling after the collapse of the Black Spoke project last year.

Race director Glen Thomson expressed excitement at Burnett's return, stating, “Josh loves this bike race and we love having him here.” Burnett’s victory two years ago was a turning point for his career, and Thomson credited the MitoQ-NZ Cycling Project for their support in propelling him to the international stage. He also hinted that this year might be the last time local fans can see Burnett in action before he embarks on a lengthy European career.

The significance of the Tour of Southland has grown in recent years, particularly following the end of the New Zealand Cycle Classic. Thomson acknowledged the efforts of Jorge Sandoval and his team for their commitment to the event, and emphasised the continued support from Southlanders in keeping the tour thriving.

In addition to Burnett’s return, changes have been made to this year’s course. Stage four will now feature an extended 10km climb up the Remarkables, with gravel sections added to make the ascent even more challenging. Thomson highlighted that such a demanding stage could help young riders attract attention from international teams.

Riders to watch out for in this year’s tour include Marshall Erwood, New Zealand’s under-23 road champion, who impressed on his debut last year, and James Gardner, who claimed a stage win during his debut. Australian riders Max Campbell and Connor Lahey, an Olympic gold medallist, are also expected to make a significant impact.

The 2024 SBS Bank Tour of Southland will begin on November 3 with the CS Roofing Stage One street race around Queens Park.
